End opening.
Programme: The Class of 96' (Working Title)

Duration: 90 minutes approx.
Feature length film. With a suggested release for Halloween holidays, as it is an appropriate theme relating to the time of year, we also suggest mainly late showings at cinemas, as this is a popular idea for films qualifying as scary.

Audience: We are targeting thriller movie lovers of a 15-25 age category, no specific gender target, but they probably will have an interest in the supernatural.

Resume: A new student (Evan Yates) and his friends (Anna Thornton and Luke Walters) move into recently refurbished halls of residence at their new university; this building hasn't been in use for over 15 years. A few odd things start to happen (moving objects, strange noises, flickering lights), which eventually begin to affect the students living there, with some even moving out. They find out from another student that the building used to be a hospital ward for those needing psychiatric help, and that some of the old residents still 'live' there. These ‘ghosts’ want to make the students leave, and they try all sorts of high jinks to scare them, finally by taking drastic measures of actually injuring them.
The ‘ghosts’ are supposedly never seen, but Anna can see them, not that she admits this to her friends. She eventually admits that she can see them, before being injured herself. Without Anna’s help the ‘ghosts’ can’t be stopped, and the students flee. This film will explore conspiracies people never believed in, such as ghosts, floating objects etc. Forcing the viewer to re-think everything they ever shunned or believed in.

Suggested elements:
a) Original music from new artists.
b) Montage and flashbacks to the days when the building was used as a former mental institution for the criminally insane.
c) First person narrative voiceover.
d) Contrasting and grainy flashbacks.

evaluation for tormented

I created the film 'tormented to ideally fit into the genre of psychological horror. It has several generic conventions throughout, such as low key lighting which is used from the beginning of the extreme close up of Nicole to the end of the opening. As a common fear for most people, darkness creates tension in the demographic. Another typical psychological horror convention would be eerie non-diegetic audio, that gradually cresendos throughout the scenes. Also typical shots such as extreme close ups and low angles to create the perfect psychological horrific atmosphere. I also used a girl antagonist, the fact that she has dark hair and pale skin is another typical generic convention as this type of antagonist also appear in well known films such as 'The Grudge' and 'The Ring.
Antagonist from 'The Grudge'
Antagonist/Protagonist from 'Tormented'

My film challenges these codes and conventions by making the main character both the protagonist and the antagonist. The plot of 'Tormented' is about a misguided girl that develops a multi personality disorder. Whereas usually the girl is shown in distress. By using these things the demographic is able to decrypt that is a psychological horror.
Several stereotypical social groups are targeted amongsnt the film 'Tormented', first the mother figure is presented in a household setting (kitchen) this creates therefore the stereotypical typical role as a housewife. Nicole Davis is used to create the vulnerabilty factor. She is a stereotypical little girl through her costume and the way she is presented. The older version of Nicole Davis however is not exactly what you would expect, she goes against her feminin side as she has a demon like personality to her.
There are several low budget film distributors that could be used for this psychological horror. However one in particular that i think would be representanle and suit well would be breaking glass productions, it distributes films of many genres, one in particular is horror, and the sub genre psychological horror. It has distributed many films that have several things in common to ours, for example 'hanger' which is about murder and vengance, very similar to our plot. We however would have no way to create merchandise or franchise our film.
'Breaking glass pictures' Logo.

'Tormented' does not aim at a particular gender audience. However it is targeted mostly to rebels, as it has twists within it, like the multi personality disorder. With violence and torture throughout, there are specific scenes that would fit our film into the BBFC rating of 15. As viewers will be exposed to disturbing scenes like when Nicole Davis is a young child and she gets kidnapped. Also the plot itself is about vengance and has murder involved. Therefore it is not to be shown to a young audience as it is unsuitable. There is no need for it to be an 18 as it is not too explicit.
As we had a typical Horror related target audience. We used the suspense factor to keep people on their toes. Through the use of non-diegetic audio in a minor key we were able to transition equilibrium into disequilibrium. This therefore has an effect on the audience and creates enigma codes as to what is going to happen as the plot thickens. These enigma codes that are created throughout, such as, 'who kidnapped the young girl?', 'what destruction is Nicole Davis' alter ego going to do?'hook the audience.
We used several different pieces of technology that we were completely new to. The camera that we used was a HD1000, it gave good quality picture and sound.
Sony HD1000

However we probably would have been better off using a flash recorder for the sound as it would have been more precise for example in the conversation, the speech would have been louder and clearer. We also used a tripod, which was very helpful for making our film look more professional, because our shots were very still and it made panning much easier, due to the camera being very big and heavy. The editing software we used was final cut express. I had never come across this software before but i found it very easy to use and had everything we needed on it, for example the effects at the beginning were called 'add noise' and 'saturate'. They worked really well together to create the 'flashback' effect we were after. We were also able to edit any lighting faults, the scene where Nicole Davis is tied up, was a rather light shot to begin with however we managed to change this by using the effects within the software, so it turned out to be great for our advantage.
Final cut express, the middle shot shows the effects used on this shot.

We progressed our project throughout. We spent a lot of time on preperation of things like storyboards and scripts, this was genrally to make filming easier, because we knew what we wanted and how we wanted it. Designing a shooting script gave us an idea of how we wanted our overall film to look like, and researching into other psychological horror films we had an understanding of how we needed to edit it. For example, finding different ideas for presenting our flash backs helped us to chose how we wanted ours to look like. Spending a lot of time on filming i have been able to understand my rules such as the 180 degree line, shot reverse shot and match on action more, because throughout every scene we had to think about these things all the time. Therefore it got more natural throughout. I have progressed in my editing by being able to use and understand the software. Before i came across final cut express i was using adobe premire elements. But i now prefer final cut, as i find it easier and that it has more potential to it. I feel that the film 'tormented' has reached the criterias that we set for it well. It produces a change from disequilibrium to equilibrium and fits under the targeted genre well. I am satisfied with the final outcome, however i feel we still could have experimented more, creating more establiishing shots at the beginning maybe to set the scenes better, and having more conversation to create a greater vulnerabilty factor towards the young girl.

EVALUATION
1. in what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of media productions?
The media film is based on horror which tend to always have a lot of generic conventions. Conversions have often influenced our work such key lighting. We used day light in the beginning to create a suspense as the audience aren’t aware of what’s to come, in the last scene where the girl has grown up the whole scene is in the dark which represents in a sense the darkness that has come over this girl, the lighting also leaves the audience feeling more scared and anxious. We also used close ups such as when the little girl is tied up in the chair which show how scared she is and helps the audience to empathize with here, created emotions.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
There aren’t very many social groups in our film, there is firstly a young girl who is yes represented in a very stereotypical way, she is the average little girl with nice very ‘girly’ clothes, long neat hair and very sweet. The little girl does the average things that are expected such as playing in the garden, with her dog and skipping around. Later on in the film her crying is again stereo typical as every little girl in that situation would react the same. This helps create sympathy from the audience and seeing a ‘cute’ young girl in that situation would. There are also a few shots of the little girl when she grows up and becomes in a sense possessed, she’s wearing black then white, her hairs covering her face etc., this again is the stereo typical look for a horror type feel. Lastly there is the mother, she is well dressed and does every day motherly jobs like feeding the dog, and this makes the film feel more real to life as she is doing things that happen in everyday life.
3. What kind of media Institution might distribute your media product and why?
Our film does not offer any opportunities for franchises/merchandising. However our film could be distributed by distributors which share a similar genre to ours such as dimensions extreme. Past films that dimensions extreme have distributed are pulse 3, zombie diaries, Eden Lake, diary of the dead, inside, nightmare detective and many more. Dimension extreme logo:

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
We went on the BBFC website to see which classification criteria our film fitted into; a link to this website is http://www.bbfc.co.uk/classification/guidelines/15-2/. We researched into our audience and found that it would be best to rate our film a 15 as it best matched to the criteria. The target audience that we decided on was around 15-25 this was because we thought it was mostly suitable for young adults/ teenagers. As our film was horror there it was not gender specific and was targeted for both male and females. Films that could be compared to ours are films such as insidious, in both films the child is in a sense possessed and taken over by a natural force. This criteria was important as under fifteens should not be exposed to behaviors’ such as our film, for example when the young girl grows up and she is very creepy looking and has bruises etc., the film also has violence such as the young girl being taken and tied up. This sort of behavior’s should be only available to those over fifteen as it avoids factors such as imitation which have happened in previous films that have been shown to children.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?
Our film is based on a young girl who gets kidnapped whilst wondering away from her home and mother, she then grows up and comes back to home as a more evil character, and she has in a sense been possessed. She starts off as a very young girl and comes back to be a teenager. This would create many emotions for mothers with young children as it shows how easy it is for you to not notice your child has wondered off or been kidnapped, again this film is also a fifteen due to the violence as a young child could be frightened at not only the more ghostly images at the end but the kidnapping of the little girl. A lot of suspense has been created in this film as it makes the audience, firstly what’s going to happen to her when she’s wondering away from the house and secondly who has her and what’s going to happen to her in the scene where she is tied to a chair. This creates a big impact as it emotionally catches the audience and puts them in a position where they are very anxious to watch more.

6. What have you learnt about technology from the process of constructing the product?
Before this project I had never used any of the equipment we had used nor had I ever used, seen or hear of Final Cut Express so throughout the whole project I gained a lot, I can now use everything very easily and am confident however there are still many areas that I struggle with such as often getting confused on Final Cut Express. We used a range of effects to try making our film more interesting for the audience such as flashbacks, sepia effect etc. Flashbacks are a very clever element to use in your film and have different effects on the audience; they are very helpful in situations such as setting a transition through the past and future which is exactly why we used this effect in our film we chose to use this element in our film as we wanted to create the effect of a time passage, from the past to present where the little girl is shown and the ways she was taken etc. then what the little girl later grows up to become. Sepia was used to create a scarier mysterious feel. As a group we faced a few problems hence why we began a new film but overall managed to pull together a film as one of the member of the group was highly committed and finished the film. We didn’t use much equipment except the HD1000 camera and tripod. We didn’t really have many problems the camera was really easy to use and was very clear and made the whole project easier however the tripod was often unbalanced which made it difficult for us to film precisely. Some of the equipment we used:

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
We first began planning our film in a group of three, we decided on the genre of our film and came up with a rough idea of what our storyline would be about, we then went on to research other films which related to ours, this helped us gain an idea of what would be expected of our film and also give us ideas and tips on things we could use. We then went on to do the rest of the planning and created more detailed planning to our film such as storyboarding and the planning of what shots we would use etc. Because we already knew exactly where our film was going to be filmed, we had all the characters chosen, the scenes planned out and the exact choice of shots were plotted out. This would have made it very easy for our film to be made and in general our whole filming process would be much easier and smoother. As I was present during the filming of the first script I began to be a lot more self-reliant with the camera, I started off by being very wary and unsure of how to hold it in place and whether I should have been more focus etc. but after practice this became a lot more easier and in my opinion I think that im a lot more aware of how the equipment is to be used, but I do think if I was present for the filming of the second script I would be more aware as I still had a lot to learn. Even though our end product was the third script that I had worked on I feel that it was very successful and I am very happy with the outcome, the film was edited well and gives the audience the feel that I was hoping it would.

*****simon it wouldn't let me add or save any pictures to it, just kept coming up blank :/

The opening of tormented, final edit. A young girl gets kidnapped and tormented only to return 13 years later with revenge on her mind.

Lifetime Video's Example of a FlashBack

Flashbacks are a very clever element to use in your film and have different effects on the audience; they are very helpful in situations such as setting a transition through the past and future. There are many different ways of creating this effect, the most common ways of doing this are, Blurring it, showing it deliberately Monochrome, add a misty border around the edge of the screen, apply an echo or other sound effect to everyone's voice, in animation or comics, apply an Art Shift, for books, changing the typeface, in comic books, changing the panel border style.
We chose to use this element in our film as we wanted to create the effect of a time passage, from the past to present where the little girl is shown and the ways she was taken etc. then what the little girl later grows up to become.

We have chosen the main storyline for our two minute film and decided that the classification for our film would be a fifteen. We have researched into past horror films and this is the usual age band that is used most commonly, we also used the BBFC website to ensure that this would be the best age group for our film. No one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work. The site stated that the guideline 15 would fit it there’s strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualized. The target audience that we decided on was around 15-25 this was because we thought it was mostly suitable for young adults/ teenagers. se7en opening credits

The opening credits to this certain film were eye catching and to me deviate from the norm as they use a mixture of fonts/images and colours to create a certain ''creepy'' feel when watched by the audience. ultimately leaving the audience eager to watch and drawn in before the film even starts. Another reason this film was chosen by me was that the title is also different from those of a normal film as the letter V is replaced by the number 7 to emphasise the title and also gives the feel that number is a vital aspect to the film.

Like the credits from the film se7en this too gives a scary feel to the audience as the producers have used a blue filter to create a more dynamic feel for example at the beginning the blue filter against the snow flake gives a very cold/wintery/miserable/gloomy affect which shows the film isn't going to be a more negative based film. The same affect from the blue filter is used through all of the opening whilst the credits are being shown.

Paranormal activity gives the same feel as intended to the one we are filming as there are obvious similarities such as floating objects/ doors banging shut etc... this was therefore the source of inspiration for our own film.

Props that will be used within our video.
Age: Teenagers.

Aim: To try and collect information to help understand what is usually expected from a good horror film etc, and to also get ideas and points off our target audience to ensure our film would be at its best.

Participants: Four or five from around college.

Questions:
What films do you prefer to watch?
Do ghost films appeal to you?
Which is your favourite ghost/supernatural film?
Do you prefer to watch them in the cinema or comfort of your own home?
What do you think is the most predictable storyline for a average ghost film?
Programme: The Class of 96'
Duration: 2 minutes approx. (Opening sequence)
Suggested release for Halloween holidays, appropriate theme relating to time of release, mainly late showings at cinemas. This will help set the mood of the film, Releasing the film at Halloween will help the film ratings as at Halloween time people want to go to the cinema to see something different and something that will give them a fright, for instance on February the 14 (Valentines day) people want to see romantic films.
Audience:
- Thriller movie lovers
- 15-25 age category
- No gender target
- Interest in the supernatural

Synopsis:
The Opening Sequence is what either catches an audience or loses them so we want the opening sequence as interesting and imaginative as possible. In the opening sequence we don't want to try and tell the whole story, we just want to give the audience an incite on whats to come and also introducing the stars that play in the film with the opening credits. The actors names can be included in the opening sequence by animation or by using quick editing and flashing lights this way the theme of the film is carried out throughout.
In the opening sequence I think it is important to introduce or ensure that the main character within the film is seen. This way they can become familiar with the characters.  In the opening sequence I want it to become apparent that all is not what it should be. We will show a student moving into their new university and the process of moving in such as collecting your room key. Looking at your room for the first time, queuing up for your timetable. Just normal new "school" things. Although using normal camera shots mixed up quick edits and flashes of darkness and bright lights this will give the impression that all is not right. From the first 2 minutes of the film it will become clear that the university is very old and hasn't been used for the last 15 years as odd things began to happen the last time it was open. This then keeps the audience interested and enthusiastic to continue with the film. Flashing from bad to good images adds to the tension of the film.
The opening sequence will continue showing the young new student finding their way around the college Although everything that appears normal such as when the student is given their timetable the camera will zoom in and will flicker onto a image that seems random. The opening sequence will end with the student on the computer and the rest of the film will begin.

Suggested elements:
1) Montage and flashbacks to the days when the building was used as a former mental institution for the criminally insane.
2) First person narrative voice over.

This title sequence caught my eye mainly because of the way the credits etc are bought into the clip. A lot of thought is put behind them and the credits alone give off the idea that the film is going to be very scary and instantly gave me the 'spooky' vibe.

This title sequence caught my eye mainly because of the way the clip is shown through an eye, this is linked to our film as we have a book which is opened and the credits and the directors names show up on the open pages.

This title sequence caught my eye mainly because of the way the whole sequence is dim and all black and white. This is linked to our film because we are aiming to use a very dim constast to give a more horror kind of feeling to it.

Media Evaluation - Jade Atkinson

Media evaluation

1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of media products?
Our media product is a horror, which has a lot of generic conventions such as low key lighting, close-ups, low-angle shots, scenes set at night etc. Our film incorporates a lot of these generic conventions. For example, the final scene where our main character, Nicole Davis, is grown up and is walking across her garden, with the scene flickering from her good and bad side, it is shot at night, which makes the scene more scary and eerie, which is what we are trying to achieve with the changing of personalities that occurs during the scene. A film which uses this same convention is Psycho. The whole film is set at night, which emphasises the suspense that the film is trying to achieve.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our media product represents some social groups. One of them is young girl. Our young girl is represented in a very stereotypical way during the film. She is wearing a long, frilly-style dress, has long hair, and even skipped around in one scene. These are all fairly stereotypical of young girls. We also portrayed her as fairly vunerable, as she is later seen tied to a chair crying, which again, could be another stereotype of young girls in showing that they are vunerable. We also show a mother figure within our film. We portrayed the mother as a stereotypical mother, as she was in the kitchen, doing chores such as feeding her daughter and preparing food for her dog. This is very stereotypical as she is shown as a typical housewife.

3. What kind of media Institution might distribute your media product and why?
Possible distributors for our film could be either Breaking Glass Pictures or Dimension extreme. These are two low key distributors that look out mainly for horror films such as ours. Breaking Glass Pictures distributed some great indie and micro-cinema films, including "Brainjacked", "Sympathy" and "Ticked off Trannies with Knives", which are films of a similar genre to ours, which makes Breaking Glass Pictures a good possible distributor, as they are know for low budget horror films. Recently, Dimension Extreme have released such titles as "Inside", "Diary of the Dead" and "Teeth", which again, are films which are similar to ours. Dimension Extreme also like to go for films that are more extreme than expected for the genre (hense the name), and because ours has a fairly extreme nature, these would be a good distributor for our film. Although, our film does not offer any opportunities for franchises/merchandising.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
Our target audience is teenage/young adults, aged 15 - 25. Our product is not gender specific, so anybody would be interested in watching our film.
We gave our film a rating of 15. This is because our film met some of the criteria on the BBFC website that made a film a 15. These criteria were things such as horror, imitable behaviour and violence. It has scenes of horror as when our main character is grown up, she is often portrayed as a scary looking girl, with her hair over her face covering her identity and walking strangely. It contains imitable behaviour as our main character when she is younger is tied to a chair full of bruises, stating that she had been beaten up, and people could imitate this behaviour. It also will have scenes of violence in the full legnth feature as there will be scenes of our main character being beaten up. Here is a link to the full list of criteria. http://www.bbfc.co.uk/classification/guidelines/15-2/

5. How did you attract/address your audience?
There are some particular points that would appeal to our audience. One point being that it is a horror movie. Our target audience is teenagers/young adults between the age of 15-25. People between this age enjoy thrills, and by going to see a horror movie would results in getting a thrill. Because our film is pretty extreme, it would encourage people like this to watch out film. Also, in one particular scene, the viewer is being put into the point of view of the person beating our main character up, as they get to see her tied to a chair, covered in bruises and crying, which only the villain would be able to see.

6. What have you learnt about technology from the process of constructing the product?
The camera we used was the HD1000 and we also used a tripod along with it. It has some stregnths and some weaknesses. The camera itself has good image and sound quality, which is essential for the production of a good film. It is also easy to use, without any complicated settings, which is good to be able to produce a film quickly. Although, it has some weaknesses. The tripod wasn't very stable, which meant getting the camera straight was quite tough. Also, it was hard to transport from one place to another as it was fairly heavy.
I have learned a great deal about editing. Before this course, I had never seen Final Cut Express before, but now, I am able to use it with great ease, but I am still learning. We used a few effects on our film which made the overall effect better. We used a sepia effect on some scenes to make the scene look darker and more eery.

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
The planning stage was fairly difficult for our final product, but it helped us when it came to producing it. By drawing out storyboards and making shooting scripts, we were able to know what kind of shots we needed to make our film look good, which enabled us to shoot them right away, instead of filming many different kinds of shots and choosing which looked best during editing. This kind of planning made the filming process much quicker and easier.
My use of specific shots has improved since our preliminary task, as I am better at match on action and shot-reverse shot to make the film flow better.
I feel a lot more confident with the equipment as I took part in more of the filming and made a huge commitment to the editing in the final product, whereas in the preliminary task, I wasn't as confident as I didn't know what to do.
I feel our end product is fairly successful at fulfilling the task, as it makes the storyline obvious, and it creates suspense. Although, if I could make any more alterations, I would provide a voiceover of the main character telling the viewers the story, as it hardly has any speaking within our film, and the viewers have to almost guess what is happening during out clip.
